Private Jet Calama to Lake Como

Calama, in Chile’s arid Atacama region, lies around 5,901 nautical miles from Lake Como, a sector well within reach of the ultra-long-range category without necessarily requiring an intermediate stop. The Gulfstream G650ER and Bombardier Global 7500 both suit the mission comfortably, cruising at altitudes up to roughly 51,000 feet and offering cabins built for a crossing of ten to eleven hours, with the kind of low cabin altitude pressurisation that noticeably eases fatigue on a sector this length. El Loa International Airport at Calama, best known as the gateway to the Atacama Desert and the region’s copper mining industry, is a less conventional but entirely capable departure point for private operators. Milan Malpensa Airport delivers travellers into the heart of Lombardy and within striking distance of a lake that could scarcely offer more contrast to the desert landscape left behind. Lake Como’s deep, cold waters sit beneath steep wooded slopes, its shoreline dotted with villages such as Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio, each linked by regular ferry crossings. Grand nineteenth-century hotels along the shore, several converted from private villas, recall the lake’s long history as a retreat for European aristocracy and, later, for industrialists and film stars alike. This route is well suited to South American mining executives and their families with European interests, or to travellers combining an Atacama expedition with a considerably more temperate stay on the shores of Lake Como. Copper remains central to the Calama region’s economy, and private aviation traffic through El Loa reflects that industry’s close ties to international markets, Europe very much included.
