Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) is Bangladesh’s main international airport, located at Kurmitola in the north of Dhaka, about 17 km from the city centre. It has a single runway, 14/32, measuring 3,505 metres (11,500 feet), and sits at an elevation of 27 feet (8 metres) at coordinates 23.8428° N, 90.4006° E. The airport is also home to a Bangladesh Air Force base.
The runway suits business jets of every size, including large-cabin aircraft on long sectors from Europe or the Gulf. A third terminal has been under construction and is set to raise annual passenger capacity from 8 million to 24 million once complete. For private passengers, the airport’s position in the north of the city puts Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara, where most embassies, corporate offices and international hotels are located, a short drive away, although Dhaka traffic can stretch that considerably. It is also well placed for garment factories in Gazipur and Uttara. Landing permission for private flights into Bangladesh should be requested well before departure.
