Visitors with time in hand often ride the cable car up Kok-Tobe hill or browse the covered stalls of the Green Bazaar before the working agenda claims the rest of the day. Others make for Panfilov Park, where the wooden Ascension Cathedral has stood without a single metal nail through more than a century of earthquakes, or push further out to Big Almaty Lake, its turquoise water framed by bare granite peaks. Either way, the sheer contrast with the St. Lawrence waterfront left behind that morning tends to stay with first-time visitors long after the meetings that brought them here have concluded.
