Maui is the second-largest Hawaiian island and the one most associated with long, private holidays: resort coastlines at Wailea and Kapalua, the summit of Haleakalā rising above 10,000 feet, and the winding Road to Hāna on the windward side. Wailea’s beachfront hotels, including the Four Seasons and the Grand Wailea, sit beside residential enclaves and golf courses, while Kapalua and Kāʻanapali on the west coast are favoured for longer stays in villas. Winter, from December to April, coincides with the humpback whale season and is the busiest period, though the island is visited all year.
Private aircraft use Kahului Airport (OGG) on the north shore, about 15 miles (24 km) from Wailea and around 45 minutes to an hour by road from the west-coast resorts. Flying privately is mostly about range and comfort: the crossing from the mainland is long, and a well-chosen super-midsize or long-range jet makes it non-stop with a full cabin, avoiding a connection through Honolulu. Flight times are roughly 5 hours 30 minutes from Los Angeles, about 5 hours from San Francisco and around 35 minutes from Honolulu for inter-island hops. Arrivals are best timed with the resort in mind, since the drive to Kapalua is longer than many expect. The Jet Collection selects an aircraft with the range for the Pacific crossing, arranges handling at Kahului and sets up the onward drive to Wailea or the west coast.
