Sonoma is both a historic town and the wider wine country north of San Francisco Bay. The town grew up around its plaza, mission and early California adobes, and it sits at the head of the Sonoma Valley, with the Carneros district to the south and Glen Ellen and Kenwood to the north. Further north, Healdsburg and the Russian River, Dry Creek and Alexander valleys hold many of the county’s best-known wineries, restaurants and hotels, including the Montage Healdsburg, while the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn is closer to town. The busiest months run from late summer through the autumn harvest, although tasting rooms and hotels stay open all year.
Two airports serve the region. Napa County Airport (APC) is about 11 miles (18 km) south-east of Sonoma town and the closer option for the Sonoma Valley and Carneros. Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS), north-west of Santa Rosa, sits around 25 miles (40 km) from Sonoma town but only a short drive from Healdsburg and the northern valleys. Flying privately saves the drive from San Francisco or Oakland, which can take well over an hour across the bridges. Flight times are around 1 hour 30 minutes from Los Angeles, about 1 hour 45 minutes from Seattle and roughly 5 hours from New York. The Jet Collection chooses the airport closest to your vineyard visits, books the aircraft and arranges a car on arrival.
