Private Jet Abacos to Bodrum

The Abacos and Bodrum lie some 5,110 nautical miles apart, one of the more ambitious pairings on the private aviation map, linking the shallow turquoise anchorages of the northern Bahamas with Turkey’s Aegean coast. A journey of this range calls for a purpose-built long-range aircraft; a Gulfstream G550 or Global 6000 covers the sector with fuel reserves to spare, cruising at altitudes up to 45,000 feet where thinner air and calmer weather systems keep the crossing smooth for the many hours aloft. Departing from Leonard M. Thompson International Airport in Marsh Harbour, passengers leave behind the Sea of Abaco’s cays and reefs for a routing that typically threads across the North Atlantic and southern Europe before descending into Milas-Bodrum Airport. Bodrum itself rewards the distance. Its harbour is guarded by the fifteenth-century Castle of St Peter, built by the Knights Hospitaller and now home to the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, while the surrounding hillsides of whitewashed villas trace the outline of ancient Halicarnassus, once site of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Wooden gulets still built along this stretch of coast set out each morning for the bays of the peninsula, and the harbour front fills each evening with fish restaurants and open-air tables looking out over the Aegean. This route suits owners with residences on both coasts and travellers building an extended itinerary between Caribbean sailing and Turkish coastal cruising, for whom a single non-stop sector removes the friction of commercial connections through Europe’s hub airports. Seasonal demand for this pairing peaks in the northern hemisphere summer, when both the Abacos and the Bodrum peninsula are at their busiest, and operators generally recommend booking well ahead of the July and August peak to secure the preferred aircraft.
